IBATECH supported the 8th eNOVATION Joint Activity, held in Zemianske Kostoľany, Slovakia, contributing to an international exercise focused on evaluating advanced technologies and innovative solutions and integrating them into existing First Responder (FR) service structures for Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) operations under near-operational conditions.
The exercise brought together CBRN specialists from first responder organisations and technology providers to address operational challenges and generate structured feedback for technology developers in CBRN protection and decontamination, with particular attention to eNOVATION technologies, including those for the treatment of sensitive materials and electronic equipment.
As a member of the eNOVATION External Supplier Platform, IBATECH demonstrated its Chemical Or Biological eRAdicator (COBRA), based on cold plasma decontamination technology, presenting an innovative dry decontamination approach for applications where conventional liquid-based procedures may be unsuitable.
The demonstration highlighted the potential of advanced plasma-based technologies to address specific decontamination challenges involving sensitive equipment, while providing an opportunity for technical exchange and collaboration with international CBRN professionals.
COBRA: Innovative Cold Plasma Decontamination Technology
One of IBATECH’s key technological contributions to the exercise was COBRA, a solution based on cold atmospheric plasma technology.
Cold plasma is a partially ionised gas that generates reactive chemical species capable of interacting with contaminants on exposed surfaces. This approach offers an alternative to conventional decontamination processes that frequently rely on liquid chemical agents.
The technology is particularly relevant for the potential treatment of sensitive electronic equipment, CBRN detection instruments, communication devices, medical devices and other critical components that may be vulnerable to conventional wet decontamination procedures.
Its main potential advantages include:
- Dry decontamination: Eliminates the need for liquid chemical decontamination agents, simplifying logistics.
- Sensitive equipment applications: Potential suitability for electronic instruments and delicate components.
- Zero secondary waste: Potential to minimise liquid waste and chemical residues, reducing environmental footprint.
- Operational flexibility: Complementary to other specialised CBRN decontamination procedures.
These characteristics position cold plasma as a promising complementary technology for CBRN decontamination, particularly where equipment compatibility and operational continuity are essential.
Strengthening International Cooperation and CBRN Innovation
Participation in the eNOVATION Joint Exercise reflects IBATECH’s commitment to technological innovation and international cooperation in the CBRN sector.
Such exercises provide valuable opportunities to demonstrate emerging technologies in operationally relevant scenarios, exchange expertise with CBRN professionals and identify new requirements for future technological developments.
Through its involvement in international initiatives and the development of advanced solutions such as COBRA, IBATECH continues to strengthen its contribution to CBRN protection, decontamination and operational preparedness.
