Advanced CBRN Reconnaissance Vehicle for the Spanish Army
IBATECH participated in the development of PITON, the new CBRN reconnaissance vehicle of the Spanish Army, providing and integrating key chemical and biological detection and identification technologies into the vehicle platform.
PITON — Plataforma de Integración Tecnológica NBQ — is built on the UROVESA VAMTAC ST5 and was developed through an R&D&I initiative promoted by the Spanish Ministry of Defence’s Directorate General for Armament and Material (DGAM) together with UROVESA. The vehicle is designed to perform CBRN reconnaissance missions in contaminated environments.
IBATECH’s contribution focused on the integration of multiple detection technologies into a single operational architecture, enabling the vehicle to combine stand-off chemical detection, on-site chemical identification and biological detection capabilities.
Our solution
IBATECH supplied and integrated some of the vehicle’s key CBRN detection systems:
- FALCON stand-off chemical detector from SEC Technologies
- Griffin G510 GC-MS for chemical identification from Teledyne FLIR
- IBAC 2 biological aerosol detection system from Teledyne FLIR
- P-NEST integration hardware from Ibatech
- Integration of the detection equipment with the vehicle’s CBRN software environment and CBRN Analysis®
- Design and optimisation of the associated communications architecture
- System commissioning
- Operator training
This combination provides PITÓN with complementary capabilities for remote detection, biological warning and detailed chemical identification within a single mobile reconnaissance platform.
System integration
A key element of IBATECH’s participation was the development of the hardware and communications architecture connecting the different CBRN sensors with the vehicle’s command-and-control environment.
P-NEST integration hardware provides the physical and communications layer required to integrate heterogeneous detection equipment into the vehicle architecture, while the CBRN software supplied within the project provides operators with an integrated operational environment.
This systems-engineering approach transforms individual detectors into a coordinated CBRN reconnaissance capability, rather than operating them as independent instruments.
The VAMTAC ST5 is specifically conceived as a modular military platform capable of being configured for different operational missions, making it suitable for this type of integrated CBRN system.
