The Spanish Army has taken delivery of a new deployable biological laboratory developed and integrated by IBATECH, significantly enhancing its capability to identify high-risk biological agents, including viruses, bacteria and toxins, in operational environments.
Valued at €1.5 million, the laboratory has been delivered to the CBRN Defence Regiment “Valencia 1”, strengthening the unit’s ability to support military operations and provide specialised assistance during CBRN incidents and civil emergency response.
A fully self-contained mobile laboratory
Designed as a fully autonomous solution, the laboratory integrates all analytical equipment and supporting infrastructure within a 20-foot High Cube ISO container.
The system includes climate control, air filtration, controlled pressurisation, electrical power generation, communications and utility services, enabling independent operation in demanding field conditions. Its transportability by land, sea and air allows rapid deployment wherever biological identification capabilities are required.
Advanced biological identification capabilities
The laboratory incorporates advanced immunological and molecular analytical technologies capable of achieving confirmed identification of biological threats.
Its analytical workflow complies with NATO STANAG 4632 requirements and includes real-time sequencing as a complementary method to RT-PCR, expanding the range of detectable pathogens while improving operational flexibility and analytical confidence.
These capabilities enable the processing and analysis of multiple sample types while providing rapid and reliable identification of bacteria, viruses and toxins.
Supporting the modernisation of the Spanish Army
The laboratory was officially presented to a delegation from the Spanish Army Logistics Support Command (MALE – Mando de Apoyo Logístico del Ejército), led by senior Army officials responsible for acquisition and logistics.
During the visit, IBATECH also showcased additional technologies supporting the future modernisation of the Army’s CBRN capabilities under the Fuerza 35 programme, including stand-off chemical detection, gas chromatography–mass spectrometry and biological aerosol detection systems.
Proven expertise in deployable CBRN laboratories
The project reinforces IBATECH’s long-standing expertise in the design, engineering and integration of deployable CBRN laboratories and mission-critical biological detection systems.
Similar solutions have previously been delivered to Moldova and the Civil Protection authorities of Morocco under NATO Science for Peace and Security (SPS) programmes, while other ongoing projects include integrated CBRN systems for the Spanish Navy’s F-110 frigates and future logistics vessels.
Through these developments, IBATECH continues to strengthen its position as a trusted engineering partner for advanced CBRN technologies, supporting defence organisations and public authorities with integrated, deployable and operationally proven solutions.
